My thoughts are flooded with memories, both suggested and vivid, people from my past and present, objects infused with the souls of those people, and specific places. The visual journey I embark on attempts to rein in this stream of consciousness and give it order. These elements, or characters, populate my compositions, allowing them a formal environment, or stage set, indicative of my intentions. They reference the matriarchs in my family, most of whom were and are artists, generations of growth, pain and empowering strength, as well as my own reaction, reflection and embodiment of those experiences. Symbolically, the tree is my youth, as much as it is age and timelessness. The printing press represents my great aunt, a formidable presence in my life. The landscapes are specific places from my youth and present. I also attempt to explore the connections between organic and inorganic, internal and external mechanisms, illusions and realities. How they interact with my characters and with the formal constructs of a composition fascinate me. The challenge of fusing all of these elements then becomes the construction of illusive yet absolute space. That is where music comes into play; beat, rhythm, timing, suspension, movements. The formalities of line, shape, form, the emotive sensation of color vs. the specific calcification of monochromatic or black and white, all play a role. These tools assist me in addressing spatial ambiguity while allowing clarity of fantasy.

The images I use evolve from life experiences, fantasies and dreams.
My figures are placed in a world of theatrical fantasy where they exist in a solid, architectural, yet ambiguous space.
Human identity is very much subjected to the outer world, which I address in non-figurative paintings. In order to investigate mysticism, the pulse of migration, patterns of life, and constants in nature, I organize elements that form landscapes as “stage sets”, allowing the chosen components to do a visual dance.
